Kyle James Opie (born July 30, 1993) is a musician from Adelaide, South Australia. He is the leader of the jazz-rock group The Cortex Shift and is also a member of Bird Detective and The Norbu Pellets.
Biography[]
Kyle Opie is a musician and teacher who lives and works on Peramangk and Kaurna country in South Australia. He was first active in the Adelaide music scene in 2012 when he began to perform locally with his band The Cortex Shift, then known as Ellipsis. During this time he also regularly attended meetings and performances held by the Adelaide Jazz Collective and was heavily influenced by other local bands and musicians such as Yeahyeahabsolutelynoway!, 1.1 Immermann and Adam Page. Kyle was a member of the review panel for MusicSA from April 2013 until reviews ceased in October 2015. In 2016 he had a brief stint writing album reviews for BSide magazine. Kyle was awarded a Bachelor of Music from the Elder Conservatorium with a major in musicology in 2017.
Kyle has been active with Extinction Rebellion South Australia since 2019 and has collaborated with musicians such as Dave McEvoy to bring music to their protests and civil disobedience actions. In April 2023 he played drums for Superdose Gangway on the New South Wales leg of their 'Quiet People With Loud Feelings' album launch tour while the band's regular drummer was unavailable. He is also a lead contributor and administrator of the Adelaide Music Wiki, active for over 10 years. Kyle was previously a member of the now disbanded groups Misfits of Sythia, Something To Rescue, The Here Away, Semi-Normal, Max Madman & The Heck Yeahs and Team Friends Unite!
In early 2020 Kyle was invited to join Bird Detective as the band's drummer. Since this time he has been most active with The Cortex Shift and Bird Detective, while occasionally also creating new tracks with the goofy recording project The Norbu Pellets. In March 2024 he joined Aumio Ishaat to work on the Solarpunk math-rock project known as Animal Observatory.
