Street Legal are a new wave indie band from Adelaide, South Australia.

Biography[]

The band formed in late 2022 in Adelaide, South Australia, by songwriter and frontman Matthew Hayward. Emerging from lockdown with a desire for creative release, the group soon solidified into a dynamic lineup featuring Libby Verrall, Max Tulysewski, Kyron Weetra, and Shara Klecka. Their sound fuses post-punk grit with synth-driven energy and early 2000s electroclash, earning them a reputation for powerful, socially conscious performances.

The band debuted live at the Grace Emily Hotel in May 2022 and quickly rose through the Australian music scene, performing alongside acts such as The Living End, Regurgitator, Sparta (USA), and Ash (IRE), and appearing at festivals including Beer & BBQ Fest, Umbrella Festival, and the Tour Down Under Showcase.

In 2025, Street Legal released their debut EP Bruxism, produced by GRAMMY-winning engineer Hugo Nicolson (Radiohead, Primal Scream) and Adelaide’s Matt Schultz (The Empty Threats / Twine). The EP explores themes of anxiety, populism, and insomnia through haunting synths and propulsive rhythms. Lead single “No Gods! No Masters! No Doorlists! No Bouncers!” was added to ABC TV’s Rage, and follow-up “Modern Ruins” reached No. 3 on the AMRAP Metro Charts in October 2023.

The band has been featured in Rolling Stone Australia, The Music, CityMag, and Triple J Unearthed, and was twice nominated for People's Choice Best Rock Act at the SA Music Awards. Their national tour in support of Bruxism was backed by the Music Development Office.
